It seemed a little strange to have a holiday, a "day off" of work and school, when everyone is always home anyways. From my work, my supervisors and leads stressed the importance of actually taking the day off, not sneaking in any work, to not even touch the computer but enjoy the day doing something completely different. So I decided to take the family to see the Redwoods in Oakland. While Muir Woods is the famous tourist destination in the area to see huge redwoods, the Reinhardt Redwoods Regional Park is lesser known but closer to where we live, and I had never been there. We set out on a five mile loop hike to explore and enjoy nature, something we needed very badly, especially myself, as I had hardly ventured outside in the last two months.
Starting at the Skyline Gate Staging Area, we planned on a 5 mile loop as our goal. Since we had never attempted a hike like this with our 4 yr old, Waylon, we were glad we had a few trail options. The trails are designed in a few loops with various paths connecting the sides of the loops, giving options to turn around and head back earlier if we needed to.
While Waylon did enjoy walking for a little bit, you can imagine we took turns carrying him the majority of the way (I think he liked being on top of Cameron's shoulders the best). We ended going the whole 5 miles we planned, which was rated from easy to moderate. So even for the rest of us it wasn't an easy walk-in-the-park, and the boys learned a little about the importance of water rationing.
It was a wonderful chance to enjoy a beautiful family hike amongst some giants of nature and experience a much needed change of scenery.
