Luca Halloween

 

For Halloween this year we decided to pay homage to the characters of Pixar's summer 2021 film, Luca.  At first when deciding on a costume idea, I didn't think much of doing Luca because of the complexity of the main characters transforming from sea monsters to humans.  Do we pick either the sea monster or human form of each character?  Do we somehow do both and transform between the two?  Eve was inspired by how some of the posters for the film showed the main characters half human and half sea monster.  Haylee then suggested that doing our costumes the same way where the top half is human and the bottom half is sea monster would eliminate the complexity of doing the hair paddles on the sea monster heads or doing face paint for the faces.  We went with that idea so we could do both sea monster and human forms without creating double the work for ourselves.

As for creating the costumes, we bought or made all of the different clothing pieces separately in order to do our best to most accurately re-create how the characters looked.  As for clothing, only Eve's (Daniela) shirt was actually part of a costume for the character (we couldn't find another dress that looked close enough to what the character wore).  The rest were clothes we found that looked like what the characters wore but were not made specifically for those characters.  Cameron's (Alberto) shirt was actually a female yellow tank top made for Chinese sizes, so it was kind of small despite being the largest size available.  Landon's shirt (Luca) was a white shirt with blueish stripes that we dyed a yellowish tint to get closer to the right color.  Cameron and Haylee (Giulia) are both wearing wigs (Haylee did not want to have to dye her hair red!).  For my (Lorenzo) mustache, I wanted something a little over the top cartoony so I actually cut out part of a wig and shaped it to get the big, bushy mustache.  For the scales leggings and tails we ordered scales printed material from Jo-Ann's where we could custom pick the scales colors to try and match those from the characters.  The seaweed shorts and skirt are actually green trash bags we cut in strips and hand stretched and wove together.  And Eve made the cat costume for Waylon (Machiavelli) in just a little over a day.
